Best time to visit popular destinations in Kerala

Kerala is blessed with a very pleasing and enjoyable climate throughout the year. Kerala has three tourist seasons which ranges from September to march, off season from April to May and monsoon season from June to August. Each season in Kerala makes it a unique and ideal destination for tourists.

Summer season begins in the month of March and continues till May. During this period Kerala receives some rainfall and experiences hot and humid weather. However, the cool breeze from Arabian Sea is a relief. Summer is a good season to visit, especially if you feel like braving heat, plan your travel from April through may and enjoy the less congested, less expensive travel experience.

Places to visit in summer: Munnar, Thekkady, beaches of Alleppey, Thiruvananthapuram and attractions of Wayanad. You can also visit wildlife sanctuaries and spice plantations. This is also the best time for viewing elephants as they spend most of the time in water.

Monsoon in Kerala arrives in the month of June and lasts till august. Kerala will be at its most beautiful in this time of year with verdant tea gardens and greenly hill stations. Monsoon is the best known for Ayurvedic treatments and renowned Kerala Ayurveda packages. According to Ayurveda tradition monsoon is the best season for rejuvenation therapy because the pores of the body open wide allowing them to fully absorb oils and therapeutic treatments.

Places to visit in monsoon: Sightseeing destinations like Idukki, Kovalam, Wayanad, Ashtamudi, and Mattupetty

Caution: Charms of wet Kerala are not well known. So if you plan to travel during monsoon carry lot of extra clothes as laundry may not dry well. Also houseboats aren’t much fun during this time and trekking is not advisable.

Just after the monsoon, in September, everything is exquisitely emerald, so a great time for hiking and exploring the hill stations. During this season the weather remains pleasant and cool which is perfect for a holiday at any of its destinations. It is a great time to explore the breath taking beauty of state. Pay a visit to view points at its hill stations, take a stroll at the beaches or lay back and enjoy the back waters.

Places to visit in winter: Kottayam, Alleppey, Varkala, Kozhikode, Thekkady, Aranmula (snake boat race) during onam harvest festival and best resorts.

Caution: Most of the resorts are sold out especially during Christmas and New Year. Block the rooms well in advance. Be prepared to shell out higher amounts for accommodation, night outs, trips and other events.
