Colds and flu are both viral infections. However, they have different symptoms. With a cold you a runny nose and a sore throat. Flu symptoms come on suddenly and may include fever, body aches or vomiting.

Having a cold or flu disrupts your daily work schedules, and you feel more irritated and restless. We bring you some simple treatments and remedies for these.

1.Drink lots of fluids: This tends to ease the congestion in your nasal cavity and to keep mucous membranes moist and to help relieve dry eyes and other common flu symptoms. Fluids also help thin mucus so that it’s easier to expel.

2.Steam: Buy a steam pot from your local chemist. Do steaming at least thrice a day to feel better with the nasal passage cleaning up. You can also add a drop of eucalyptus oil as its aroma will ease the congestion and make you feel better.

3.Practice yoga: There are some asanas mainly dedicated to breathing. Doing pranayama and other breathing exercises not only relieves your cold and flu but also builds in your resistance to cold and flu.

4.Drink herbal tea: Make a tea with ginger, pepper, basil leaves and turmeric. Add a little jaggery and drink it hot. These ingredients build up the heat in your body and also help to decongest the nasal cavity.

5.Drink hot soups: Drinking hot chicken soup will also do wonders to you during the cold and flu season. If you are a vegetarian, go for vegetable soup with a generous amount of pepper, ginger and garlic.

6.Try nasal sprays: Nasal sprays are all said to give you relief from cold and flu.

7.Stay warm: Needless to say, keep yourself warm. Also, don’t forget to cover your ears and feet as you tend to feel colder if these areas are not covered.
