Beat the Fear and Become a Better Public Speaker
No matter whether it is
your 1st speech or your 100th speech, that unsettled feeling in your
gut is always going to be there. Great established speakers also fear
and take some time to become comfortable before giving a speech.
Most of us fear of being
ridiculed and also ‘what if I forget’ syndrome. This is normal.
If you want to be a good speaker and moreover, if you want to be
comfortable and efficient while giving a speech, here are some simple
steps you can follow:
1.Know your audience:
Before you start preparing your speech, make a small research about
your audience. If they are a novice, they need to be treated
differently from those who already have some knowledge of the
subject.
2.We approximately take
10 minutes to speak out 2000 words. Based on this, prepare your
speech.
3.You can write down some
key points and carry it with you during the speech. This way you will
not miss out on anything important.
4.Do not have eye contact
with only one person in the audience. Just keep looking at the entire
hall in general. Looking at only one person will make you nervous if
you are a novice.
5.Add in some interesting
stories, jokes and the like to keep the audience captivated.
6.Respect time. Be at the
scheduled place at least 15 minutes early, so that you can get time
to gauge the place and situation.
7.If you are a beginner,
practice the speech at home. But, remember, you will not be able to
reproduce exactly the same words. And this is perfectly fine.
8.Be prepared for
questions. Also, if you don’t know the answer, don’t panic. You
can give diplomatic answers like appreciating the question and
promising to get back to that person with the answer.
