Work Your Way to the Top with an Elegant Work Wear – 4 Essential Rules for Work Wear
Work wear for women is as important as any work related skill if not more. The reason for giving so much emphasis to work wear is it tends to send across a certain message about your personality – knowledgeable, approachable, authoritative, friendly etc. People judge you in the first couple of seconds of meeting you based on how you have dressed and they way you carry yourself. Hence, what you wear to work not only has to be presentable but it should portray your personality too.
Indian women are indeed lucky as they could wear their ethnic dresses like salwar suits and saris to work. Despite options available to pick and choose garments, the underlying rules remain the same, whether you are wearing a western formal outfit or Indian attire.
Here are a few rules that you need to keep in mind to make an impact at work with your personality.
- Sari & Accessories: If you are wearing a sari to work, avoid wearing flowers in your hair. Hair needs to be neatly pinned, plaited and left without strands flying around. Wearing too many gold or glass bangles does not give a professional look too. Cottons/ silks with soft prints look very elegant at work.
- Salwar that suits you: If you intend to wear a salwar suit, ensure it fits properly and is neither too tight nor too loose. Soft shades with simple embroidery or prints makes you stand out. Bold and bright prints are a great put off.
- Western wear: If it is a western formal wear, team up the pants with a nice top or shirt. Accessorize with complementing scarves and jackets. Stick to neutral shades for an elegant and professional look.
- Makeup: It adds to the overall look too. Ensure you use light and natural shades for makeup with nude lip colour or a lip gloss. Funky eyeliners or lip colours do not make for a professional look. A little makeup is always better than a bare face. Do away with anklets, danglers or chunky jewellery to work. You would end up looking more like a ‘mobile accessories outlet’ rather than an elegant woman at work.
Finally, take caution when you dress up with Indian attire; it is fine line between looking elegant and looking decked up.
…because what you wear speaks volumes about you. Dress elegant!
