8 Tips to help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is becoming a common ailment today. It is disheartening to see even youngsters suffering from this nowadays. Unhealthy lifestyle patterns are the primary cause for this. Fast life and so called ‘cool’ attitude are doing more damage than good.

Common risk factors include increased weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) levels. Changing the habits of a lifetime isn’t easy, but it’s worth the effort.

We bring you eight easy ways to help you prevent type 2 diabetes.

1.Keep your weight incheck. If you are fat or obese, start watching your weight. Excess body fat, particularly in the abdomen, increases the body’s resistance to insulin hormone which in turn can lead to type 2 diabetes.

2.Practice exercising regularly. Exercising helps manage weight, reduce blood glucose levels and may also improve blood pressure and cholesterol.

3.Have a balanced, nutritious diet. The right food prevents all types of ailments. Cut down salt, saturated and trans fats. Eat more fruit, vegetables, and high-fibre foods.

4.Do not smoke. It is good for many more reasons than you think. Also, smokers are twice as likely to develop diabetes as non-smokers.

5.Eat fresh. Even if the food you cook is bland, avoid these easy takeaways and fast foods. Eat food prepared with fresh ingredients rather than tinned and canned food.

6.Keep your alcohol intake in check. Too much alcohol can lead to excess weight gain and thereby increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels.

7.Keeping your blood pressure in check is crucial. Meditation, regular eating and sleeping habits, exercise and a cheerful mental set up can do wonders.

8.Pay a visit to your doctor for regular check-ups. With age, our body tends to slow down and invite ailments. Do regular tests for blood glucose, blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.
