5 Facts About Depression and Anxiety and How to Overcome with These 10 Easy Steps

Depression is a mental disorder characterised by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. World Health Day 2017 was observed on April 7, with the theme being ‘Depression’ as it is a priority area of public health. Globally, it is the biggest cause of ill health & disability. Here are 5 facts you need to know about depression and anxiety.

Depression is a pervasive feeling and it feels like all hope has disappeared and things you might have enjoyed at one point of time, become a chore. Unfortunately, it isn’t simple to snap out of depression, but there are ways to alleviate the symptoms.

1.Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment. Practice on engaging your senses in the moment. Focus on touch, taste, sight, sound and smell. Engaging the senses leaves less time for worry.

2.Listen to upbeat music
Music is the food for the soul, and listening to upbeat tunes can change the atmosphere and create a positive vibe, and help you feel better.

3.Include Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet
Studies have shown that a fatty acid known as EPA can cause up to a 50% decrease in symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disorders, unexplained feelings of sadness, suicidal thoughts, and decreased sex drive.

4.Use touch
Studies have proven that touch therapies can help overcome depression, lower the stress hormone cortisol and increase the feel-good hormone oxytocin.

5.Use more light
Less sunlight has shown to cause low mood and therefore sleeping problems, anxiety, depression, irritability, fatigue, apathy and loss of libido. Using light can help to overcome depression and these other symptoms.

6.Practice cognitive therapy
This is based on the principle that certain ways of thinking can trigger certain health problems, such as depression. The aim is to change your ways of thinking, and help your thought patterns be more realistic and helpful.

7.Connect with friends
Connecting with friends can have a huge positive effect on your mind, so don’t isolate yourself even though it may seem easier to do.

8.Get enough sleep

Inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress. The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight.

9.Exercise
Exercise releases endorphins which improve natural immunity and improve mood.

10.Write in a journal

Having an outlet to write down fears and worries can be soothing and help ease your mind. Another good way to use a journal is to write at least five things every day that you are grateful for. This makes us think positively and can help to remind that things are never that bad.
