Things you must know about the holy month of Ramadan
Ramadan a holy month, is the ninth
month of the Muslim calendar. As a mark of the first verses of Quran
being revealed to prophet Muhammad in 610 CE, Ramadan is celebrated
worldwide. The day when the Quran was given to the prophet falls
under the last 10 days and is known as the Laylat al-Qadar.
Here are seven facts about the holiest
month of Ramadan that you should know:
- During the month of Ramadan Muslims are abstained from eating, drinking or any form of intake. They wake up before the sunrise and eat a little before starting the fast. They brea the fast again post sunset.
- They are not allowed to intake any kind of entertainment, be it through media, gossip and so on. This is done so that they focus on the prayers and spirituality at the fullest.
- People who are pregnant, mentally/ physically unfit or are those who haven’t hit puberty need not fast.
- The Muslim calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar. Hence, though the festival happens on the same day every year on the Muslim calendar, it changes every year on the Gregorian calendar.
- People even celebrate Ramadan in transit. They can recite prayers and make time for the practice of Namaz while travelling.
- Charity is the biggest onus during the celebration of Ramadan. Zakat or the mandatory charity or Sadaqa the volunteer charity, are both a part of the celebration. Charity during this month is considered the most auspicious.
- Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam with Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj that the Muslims must follow.
